Day-by-Day Ascent

Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Cave Camp
Day 1Rainforest

Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Cave Camp

Steep climb immediately from Umbwe Gate through thick rainforest. The trail is relentlessly upward but rewards with beautiful forest scenery. Camp in a small clearing at Umbwe Cave.

Umbwe Cave → Barranco Camp
Day 2Heath & Moorland

Umbwe Cave → Barranco Camp

Exit the forest and continue steeply through heath and moorland. Breathtaking views as you arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the Great Barranco Wall.

Barranco Wall → Karanga Camp
Day 3Alpine Desert

Scale the famous Barranco Wall and traverse the Southern Circuit to Karanga Camp.

Karanga Camp → Barafu High Camp

Final descent to Mweka Gate. Summit certificate and transfer to Moshi.
